Thursday Night Preview (Matty B)
TCU was able to shut down Texas for a half on Saturday as they led 10-0 at the break. But the wheels came off in the 2nd half and Texas scored 34 points while racking-up over 400 yards of offense. A big part of that was TCU’s inability to do anything on offense. They scored just 3 points (their lone TD was an interception return), gained just 251 yards, and couldn’t hold onto the football as they fumbled 6 times which allowed Texas to take control. TCU put in a ton of preparation for that game, and they are definitely disappointed with the result. Head coach Gary Patterson: “I think TCU is past the moral victories. This is not one of those games where you are happy you played well for a half. We came here to win.”
Now on a short week, TCU has to travel over 700 miles to Colorado Springs and play their first conference game at Air Force. The academies are all tough to prepare for (because they all run some form of the Wishbone), and knowing TCU put all their effort into the Texas game, there will be some lack of intensity in this game, especially on the defensive side. Air Force has a new coaching staff that was suppose to implement more of a passing attack, but that hasn’t been seen yet as they have run the ball 123 times to just 32 passes. TCU does possess a very strong defensive line, but the quick turnaround and lack of prep time is a big disadvantage when facing this quirky offense.
Neither offense has done anything yet this year. They’ve scored a combined 51 points over 3 games vs. I-A competition, but look for that to change here. And one would think TCU’s defense would bounce back strong after such a weak performance, but that hasn’t been the case over Gary Patterson’s 6 years on the job. TCU has lost 20 games over that span, and my coaching spread pattern tells us to expect a high scoring game. Four of those losses have come to end the season, so we can toss those results. That leaves us with a 16 game sample, and in the next game after a straight-up loss, TCU has gone 12-4 straight-up and 8-8 against the spread. They win by an average final score of 29.3 to 23.5. The total is an average of 52.8 points per game which is 10 points greater than the posted total, and in the 16 games, TCU and their opponent have scored 42 or more combined points in 12 of them. That’s 12-4 over this posted total, and that’s good for a 75% angle in favor of a high scoring game. Go Over the Total.
